Chiefs are beaten in Tennessee; Patrick Mahomes suffers his ninth interception of the season and Kansas City is 0-4 against teams with a winning record.
Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs can’t find a way to beat the best teams in the AFC.
The Tennessee Titans (5-3) scored in their first five offensive series, dominated on both sides of the ball, and humiliated Kansas City (3-4) 27-3, which is now 0-4 against teams with a winning record.
The Chiefs now have losses to Baltimore, Chargers, Buffalo, and Tennessee.
It’s Kansas City’s worst start since 2015 when they started 1-5 and then won 10 in a row to qualify for the postseason.
Mahomes, with a fumble and an interception, is far from his best.
It is the sixth game in a row that Mahomes has been intercepted.
It was the Titans’ fifth win over the Chiefs in the most recent six. Kansas City’s only victory came in the 2019 AFC Championship Game.
Coach Andy Reid is 2-9 against Tennessee, including his stint in Philadelphia.
Absolute dominance
Tennessee had the first series of the game and immediately converted it to points, but not in the traditional way. Henry received the direct center and when it looked like he would run to the end zone, he hit the brakes, jumped, and threw a five-yard touchdown pass to tight end MyCole Pruitt for the quick 7-0.
The Titans’ next series featured two key catches from AJ Brown. First a catch on the 46-yard band (which required a challenge from coach Mike Vrabel because it was originally scored as an incomplete pass) and then on the end zone on a 24-yard play for 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
It was a nine-play series that covered 97 yards in 5:34 minutes.
Mahomes suffered his ninth interception of the season while searching for Josh Gordon; the send was deflected by David Long and intercepted by fellow linebacker Rashaan Evans at the 46th Kansas City.
Eight plays later, Tannehill scored on a 2-yard dash for 24-0 with 2:48 left in the first half.
It looked like the Chiefs could finally make points, but Mahomes fumbled when trying to gain yards with his legs; the fumble was forced by Kevin Byard and recovered by Matthias Farley in midfield.
Randy Bullock hit his second field goal of the game and sent the Titans into the locker room with a 27-0 lead.
The stats
Tannehill was 21 of 27 for 270 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.
Brown had 8 receptions, with 133 yards and a touchdown, while Henry had 86 yards on 26 rushing attempts.
Mahomes, who couldn’t finish the game after receiving a blow to the head in the fourth quarter, went 20 of 35 for 206 yards, with no touchdown pass, an interception, and a fumble.
In Week 8, Tennessee visits the Indianapolis Colts, while Kansas City will host the New York Giants.
